End Of The Month Tunes

tropical internetIf  you are like me than your Internet cap rolls over each month. This means the end of the month is usually a digital binge where you try and catch up on youtube, get your essential podcasts and browse your favourite source of free music – rcrdlbl.com. I am continually impressed by the amount of music that is added. I think its a really amazing way of distributing music where all parties feel satisfied. Here a few choice picks.

Kelly Polar is signed to Morgan Geist’s Environ label, he is responsible for most of their divine strings on the Metro Area tracks. I can’t put my finger on what part of this reminds me of Sid’s work a bit.

Kelly Polar – Entropy Reigns (In The Celestial City)

Really sweet track with a fairly tropical vibe like Kraftwerk meets Fela Kuti.

Emperor Machine – Clapper

In Flagranti have received the most success when they flirt with electro and this is a prime example of that, it feels a bit like a crisper sounding Brash and Vulgar.

Golden Bug – Look Look Look (In Flagranti Remix)

Probably one of my favourite tracks from the new Horse Meat Disco compilation. I played this after Tiga’s Shoes at Cuckoo a while back and it went down a treat.

Plaza – (Got My) Dancing Shoes

Thunderbird

golden filter

Dummy have done it again with another exceptional release from The Golden Filter. Hype can be a band’s friend or enemy – the only thing people love more than building up a band is to take it down especially if a band rises to prominence on 1 killer single. Fortunately critics will have a hard time finding fault with this brilliant  follow up to Solid Gold – Thunderbird.

Penelope’s voice soars to etheric heights, and the percussive breakdown towards the end feels truly spectacular – there is just an effortlessly epic quality to this song.

Wet Love

kids with gunsTom and Alex of Kids With Guns are pretty awesome guys. They like gin and tonic and love amazing music. They don’t mix well with hay fever tablets or South Rakkas Crew fans. Catch them at Adults Arts Club the new Thursday night at Sugar , starting the 15th of October.

Wet Love

Pilooski – Love Is Wet
Metro Area – Miura
Woolfy Vs. Projections – Neeve

In Flight Entertainment

When i was at high school everyone else was into Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. If  you caught the bus or hung out solo in the school yard you had a walkman that had been stolen off a bigger brother ; they would listen to their “Escape” soundtrack. I remember distinctly feeling different watching the school yard swell in and out of chaos to Herbie Hancocks – Headhunters record.

Another tune on my airy thrashed out tape was The World Is A Ghetto by the now face-lifted George Benson, a morning staple for me through out high school. The way the strings breeze through like a waking summer tide and those hats, man those hats. Harvey Mason is a gun drummer, in fact the whole band is one of those rhythm sections GB was lucky to have.

If your ever playing a bar or lighting candles for your date, as you drop the home cooked main course on the table pop this one on in the back ground and you’ll be sure to have good dreams.

House of Jealous Immigrants

immigrant

I have deep reservations about the “mash-up”. Innately gimmicky a mash-up can be truly sublime like 2 Many DJ’s Magnificent Romeo. However, it can go horribly horribly wrong especially now that everyone can torrent Ableton in 30 minutes.

fortunately Cosmo Black’s combination of the Rapture and Black Sabbath errs on the Radio Soulwax end of the spectrum and not the “I’m sure Prince and Justice will sound good together even if it isn’t synced properly”.
