The Swiss

Sid, Tony and Luke have been heating up clubs and warming (maybe breaking) hearts across Europe this month. Recently they put together a mix for a Belgian radio station for the fans - Belgium is the first country where they have had a top 40 single. Hopefully when they get a Top of the Pops performance it will take the best part of early Depeche Mode, Zombie Nation and Tiga.

The Swimmers

Good friends and all round legends Mo & Dave from The Glimmers invited us into their studio in Ghent last night; we had a blast. The project between The Swiss and Glimmers is now formerly known as The Swimmers. The Glimmers have a history as long as your arm and have been extremely important in the history of disco particularly over the past 15 years. Founders of labels, club nights and champions of the vinyl format, these guys continue to push forward with there new release out on Gomma later this year. Here’s the remix of Bubble Bath they knocked up recently. Stay tuned for Drunken Disco heat!

Canyons

This Sunday (Queen’s Birthday Weekend) Canyons will be gracing Sugar with their presence. These guys are really nice as well as being amazing DJ’s. They were here about a year ago playing the Ed Castle and the select crew of music lovers in the know  had an amazing time. They are signed to Modular, had a release on DFA and run their own label; Hole in the Sky.

Here is a taste of what to expect. The mix is from Melbourne radio show Death of a Disco Dancer and has quite a few jams.

DJ Spun

This Thursday will feature DJ Spun of Rong Music – an amazing New York Label. He started out as a punk ( a surprisingly common beginning for House and Disco DJ’s) and soon moved onto hip hop and later got entangle with Harvey and Sarcastic Disco. He changed coasts to New York where he started Rong with Ben Cook. He also curates Museum of Modern Art PS1′s seminal Warm Up – a summer party in the museum’s courtyard.

He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

Winston: What made you shift from punk to dance music?

Jason (DJ Spun): I got into hip hop first which had somewhat similar energy music of the oppressed and disenfranchised. I was prob

ably rebelling against how stale and narrow minded I felt some people in the punk scene had become.

Winston: What made you want to start your label Rong?

Jason: There wasn’t really a master plan. I moved to New York and it was a way for my partner Ben Cook and I to keep working together and to put out some music from ourselves and some like minded friends. It was easy to get it started at that time, being that I was good friends with the people at Syntax Distribution (RIP).

Larry Levan

We at Adult Arts Club are a little obsessed with Larry Levan. Since some of us are trying to cut back on our obsessions with Arthur Russell our love for Levan has increased to fill the void. This is an amazing mix of his productions and remixes and really captures quintessential 80s disco. If you don’t know the history behind the Paradise Garage which Levan was resident of for nearly a decade than  educate yourself – it’s kind of a heartbreaking story so get the tissue ready.  It’s mixed by DJ Spinna who is pretty amazing in his own right – check out his compilation The Boogie back, you will thank me later.
