The Swiss

Sid, Tony and Luke have been heating up clubs and warming (maybe breaking) hearts across Europe this month. Recently they put together a mix for a Belgian radio station for the fans - Belgium is the first country where they have had a top 40 single. Hopefully when they get a Top of the Pops performance it will take the best part of early Depeche Mode, Zombie Nation and Tiga.

Canyons

This Sunday (Queen’s Birthday Weekend) Canyons will be gracing Sugar with their presence. These guys are really nice as well as being amazing DJ’s. They were here about a year ago playing the Ed Castle and the select crew of music lovers in the know  had an amazing time. They are signed to Modular, had a release on DFA and run their own label; Hole in the Sky.

Here is a taste of what to expect. The mix is from Melbourne radio show Death of a Disco Dancer and has quite a few jams.

DJ Spun

This Thursday will feature DJ Spun of Rong Music – an amazing New York Label. He started out as a punk ( a surprisingly common beginning for House and Disco DJ’s) and soon moved onto hip hop and later got entangle with Harvey and Sarcastic Disco. He changed coasts to New York where he started Rong with Ben Cook. He also curates Museum of Modern Art PS1′s seminal Warm Up – a summer party in the museum’s courtyard.

He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

Winston: What made you shift from punk to dance music?

Jason (DJ Spun): I got into hip hop first which had somewhat similar energy music of the oppressed and disenfranchised. I was prob

ably rebelling against how stale and narrow minded I felt some people in the punk scene had become.

Winston: What made you want to start your label Rong?

Jason: There wasn’t really a master plan. I moved to New York and it was a way for my partner Ben Cook and I to keep working together and to put out some music from ourselves and some like minded friends. It was easy to get it started at that time, being that I was good friends with the people at Syntax Distribution (RIP).

Larry Levan

We at Adult Arts Club are a little obsessed with Larry Levan. Since some of us are trying to cut back on our obsessions with Arthur Russell our love for Levan has increased to fill the void. This is an amazing mix of his productions and remixes and really captures quintessential 80s disco. If you don’t know the history behind the Paradise Garage which Levan was resident of for nearly a decade than  educate yourself – it’s kind of a heartbreaking story so get the tissue ready.  It’s mixed by DJ Spinna who is pretty amazing in his own right – check out his compilation The Boogie back, you will thank me later.

Jacques Renault

Let’s face it we are spoiling you. It was only 2 weeks ago that we had Woolfy, a month since we had Maurice Fulton and a month before that Greg Wilson at Adult Arts Club. This week we have Jacques Renault. I think his releases speak for themselves but it’s worth noting he has DJed at the Guggenheim Museum and was resident at an NYC club called Happy Endings, which I vote Sugar change its name to. His prolific body of work includes  releases on Rvng Intl., Wurst Edits, Hole in The Sky, I’m A Cliche, Italians Do It Better and DFA.

If that doesn’t entice this  amazing mix should.

Greg Wilson recently graced the Adult Art Club with his extensive talent. From DJing at the Hacienda and Wigan Pier to being the first DJ to mix on television its safe to say the man is a legend in his own. He seems to be going from strength to strength on the remix front with several upcoming tracks from Goldfrapp, The XX and Florence and the Machine.

You Move The Way I Like

Our Brisbane based friend Youth has put together a new track which we at Adult Arts Club HQ think is pretty choice. It kind of has an In Flagranti cut up electro style  mixed with camp 90s house – if you have any comprehension of quality you know this is  an irresistible combination.

The Re-Groove: Youth

youth2

there has recently been an increase in the flow of amazing re-edits of perennial classics and forgotten gems along the lines of those done by pioneers Larry Levan, Shep Pettibone and Francois K. With our new regular  Re-Groove series we try and get to know the crate diggers and splicers behind these tracks.

Our first interview comes from Brisbane resident Youth. you can catch him DJing with the Swiss at Rhino Room or at the Touch Party at The Ed Castle Hotel on the  23rd in Adelaide. He can also be found out and about in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Winston: Where do you come from?

Youth: A French woman and an Australian man hah. No I was born in Sydney and grew up on the outskirts of Byron Bay in Northern NSW.

Winston: How did you first get into electronic music?

Youth: I first really got into electronic music through hip-hop. Buying DJ Shadows Endtroducing pretty much blew my 14 year old mind and encouraged me to buy a stack load of vinyl (most of it being op shop junk) but that kick started my passion for creating music.

Winston: What is about a song that compels you to edit it?

Youth: There can be a few defining points to choose a song for an edit. I personally like to take something and create something new out of it that I can fit into my dj sets; generally they’re tracks I already feel are pretty perfect but could do with a little spicing up.
Being able to ‘break’ apart the original enough to create something new without it sounding like hot garbage is also a pretty defining point in the production side of things. Read the rest of this entry »
