Jesus Christ the guys at Cutters have gone done it! This release is dope. Its full of heat from all corners of the planet and its rather exciting that Discoz is growing into a legitimate sub genre. There’s a bunch of remixs.
Sid, Tony and Luke have been heating up clubs and warming (maybe breaking) hearts across Europe this month. Recently they put together a mix for a Belgian radio station for the fans - Belgium is the first country where they have had a top 40 single. Hopefully when they get a Top of the Pops performance it will take the best part of early Depeche Mode, Zombie Nation and Tiga.
This Sunday (Queen’s Birthday Weekend) Canyons will be gracing Sugar with their presence. These guys are really nice as well as being amazing DJ’s. They were here about a year ago playing the Ed Castle and the select crew of music lovers in the know had an amazing time. They are signed to Modular, had a release on DFA and run their own label; Hole in the Sky.
Here is a taste of what to expect. The mix is from Melbourne radio show Death of a Disco Dancer and has quite a few jams.
This Thursday will feature DJ Spun of Rong Music – an amazing New York Label. He started out as a punk ( a surprisingly common beginning for House and Disco DJ’s) and soon moved onto hip hop and later got entangle with Harvey and Sarcastic Disco. He changed coasts to New York where he started Rong with Ben Cook. He also curates Museum of Modern Art PS1′s seminal Warm Up – a summer party in the museum’s courtyard.
He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.
Winston: What made you shift from punk to dance music?
Jason (DJ Spun): I got into hip hop first which had somewhat similar energy music of the oppressed and disenfranchised. I was prob
ably rebelling against how stale and narrow minded I felt some people in the punk scene had become.
Winston: What made you want to start your label Rong?
Jason: There wasn’t really a master plan. I moved to New York and it was a way for my partner Ben Cook and I to keep working together and to put out some music from ourselves and some like minded friends. It was easy to get it started at that time, being that I was good friends with the people at Syntax Distribution (RIP).
We at Adult Arts Club are a little obsessed with Larry Levan. Since some of us are trying to cut back on our obsessions with Arthur Russell our love for Levan has increased to fill the void. This is an amazing mix of his productions and remixes and really captures quintessential 80s disco. If you don’t know the history behind the Paradise Garage which Levan was resident of for nearly a decade than educate yourself – it’s kind of a heartbreaking story so get the tissue ready. It’s mixed by DJ Spinna who is pretty amazing in his own right – check out his compilation The Boogie back, you will thank me later.
Let’s face it we are spoiling you. It was only 2 weeks ago that we had Woolfy, a month since we had Maurice Fulton and a month before that Greg Wilson at Adult Arts Club. This week we have Jacques Renault. I think his releases speak for themselves but it’s worth noting he has DJed at the Guggenheim Museum and was resident at an NYC club called Happy Endings, which I vote Sugar change its name to. His prolific body of work includes releases on Rvng Intl., Wurst Edits, Hole in The Sky, I’m A Cliche, Italians Do It Better and DFA.
The Re-Groove returns to speak with Belgium production trio, Villa. Hailing from Ghent the group are purveyors of high quality dance music and have mixed one of the year’s best compilation: Cosmic Balearic Beats Volume 2 out on Eskimo Recordings The group have also remixed for the likes of The C90s, The Golden Filter and Moby aswell as dabbling with disco edits with a release on seminal edit label Mindless Boogie‘s 20th release.
Winston: Where did you grow and where do you live now?
Villa: We all come from a different place, but Villa as a music project is originated from Ghent. That’s a little town in Belgium with a vivid music scene. The studio is based at Seba’s place. He lives in a little village in the countryside.
Teenagersintokyo have consistently been releasing high quality music and I have been a fan since I heard them nearly 4 years ago. Their latest single ‘Peter Pan’ is no exception. the staccato guitar interceded with brooding synth and raw drum beats is sublime. The Horrors‘ re-imagining delves into minimal syth territory, with a what feels like hi-nrg made for an endless night for those who will never grow old. We at Adult Art Club can’t wait for their debut album produced by David Kosten, of Bats For Lashes fame, pegged for an spring/fall release in ’10.
